The Gokyo Lake Trek is 11 days of captivating and gratifying adventure under the majestic shadows of Himalayas. It's not just an adventure but an experience of life pulling one into nature's might. The journey leads from the mesmerizing high hills filled with Rhododendron forests, across perennial rivers and into the foot of worlds' highest peak in Khumbu and Everest region of Nepal.
The Everest Gokyo Lake Trek offers exhilarating views of stunning mountain lakes of Gokyo valley over the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas. The trekking route follows though the Dudh Koshi River to its source, Gokyo Lake east of the Everest Base camp.Gokyo valley is comprised of six glacial lakes. They are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists known to radiate an aura that revitalizes and energizes spiritually anyone exploring the lake.
The trail is also famous for view of Gokyo peak from Gokyo Ri at 5357m. Though less frequented as compared to Everest Base Camp route the views of Everest from Gokyo Ri are referred to be better than Kalapattar of Everest Base Camp. One can also behold views of several other peaks f the Himalayas most famously Mt. Everest(8848m), Mt. Cho-Oyo (8153m), Mt. Makalu(8475 m)and Mt. Lhotse(8511m).The best season for Gokyo Lake trek is from September to December and February to May.
The trek begins from Kathmandu with a short flight to an airstrip in Lukla. The flight is as breathtaking as possible. The trail begins from Namche Bazaar also known as 'Gateway to Everest' where the village hustles and bustles daily with adventures from all around the world. The intensity of Namche Bazaar sets up the energy for the journey that is to come. Trekking trail is provided with lodges and teahouses managed by people of Sherpa community that have a long history with the Everest region. This trek is also a cultural experience to delve into as provided by their cuisines and lodgings in the area.
The trail from Namche Bazaar involves landscapes with unique charm and glorifying vegetation through rough terrain. The views from the high altitude are as breath taking as flying. These landmarks give an epic feeling to a rather boring everyday sunrise and sunset over the horizon beyond the mountains.
Other attractions on this eventful journey includes Ngozumba glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. It acts as source to Gokyo lakes and other glacial rivers.
Day 1: Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Hike to Phakding
A 40 minutes flight early in the morning will be required to reach Lukla.After arrival you will be introduced to trek guides and porters. The trek starts with a short walk to Chaurikharka village and descends towards Dudh Koshi valley. The trail follows along Dudh Koshi River to reach Phakding village where we spend overnight.
Day2: Trek to Namche Bazaar
After breakfast we leave Phakding village for Namche Bazaar. The follows over Dudh koshi River by a suspension bridge into a pine forest. We arrive at the check post and entrance to Sagarmatha National Park and descend through Dudh Koshi river .We pass through Josale village before reaching Namche Bazaar where we stay overnight in a local lodge.
Day 3: Namche Bazaar
Today will be acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar.In the morning after breakfast we visit Sherpa Museum. We will also visit local shops for necessary equipment and clothing. In the afternoon we visit villages near Namche Bazaar.We return to the lodge and spend overnight
Day 4: Trek to Dole
The trail climbs up to the village of Khumjung . The trek ascends up a ridge and then descends down from Khumbila peak. We descend down towards Sanasa and ascend up to Mongla. Along the way the panoramic views of Himalayas can be viewed. The trail descends further through Phortse Tenga and climbs steeply to Dole through Rhododendron forest. We spend overnight at local lodge.
Day 5: Trek to Machhermo
We climb up steadily along the side of the valley. The trail passes through settlements with views of Mt. Cho Oyu, and views of Kantega and Thamserku as we descend down the valley.By the time of lunch we arrive to Machhermo. We stay overnight at local lodge.
Day 6: Trek to Gokyo
We follow the trail to Pangka and descend following one of the rivers flowing down from the west side of Ngozumpa Glacier. The path climbs past first of the holy lakes that leads to second lake. Crossing the second lake heads to Lobuche. Gokyo is located at the eastern shore of third lake, Dudh Pokhari. We stay overnight in a lodge.
Day 7: Explore Gokyo
Today we explore the Gokyo valley and its lakes. We visit the first mountain lake 'Longpunga Tso', the second 'Taujung Tso' and the third ' Gokyo Tso'. We explore the Cho-oyu base camp where photography of mountains are highly encouraged. We can also take a trip to the Fourth and the Fifth Lake. We stay overnight at the lodge.
Day 8: Trek to Gokyo Ri and back to Machhermo
Early morning we ascend a steep up the hillside to Gokyo Ri. From Gokyo Ri the summits of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu can be viewed at their finest. After lunch the trip to Machhermo village is a short walk.We spend overnight at the lodge.
Day 9: Trek to Namche Bazaar
The trail descends through Dole and continues to descend through Rhododendron forest to Photse Tenga. The path ascends through Mongla Danda and again descends to Kyanjoma. The walk leads to Namche Bazaar where we spend overnight at the lodge.
Day 10: Trek to Lukla
The trek from Namche Bazaar follows through Monjo to Lukla. The trail is of short climbs and across Bhote-Koshi River. The last uphill climb brings us to Lukla where we spend overnight.
Day 11: Flight to Kathmandu
We take an early morning 30 minutes flight to Kathmandu. On your last day you are free go sightseeing visit world heritage sites around the valley.
